Teddy the Jumping Spider

Description

Creating a clay spider was a interesting puzzle to solve. Not only are arachnids anatomically different from most animals I've dealt with, they also have extra limbs and parts compared to other creatures. There was a ton of referencing involved in this project. Thank goodness for Google images. :iconrelievedplz:

I happen to be an arachnophobe and yet I absolutely adore one species--the jumping spider--enough to sculpt it. Those huge eyes, tiny bodies, and fluffiness are the equation for cute. oOwOo I still want to cry in a corner when I see them in real life though.

Teddy is 8 cm wide, 4 cm long, and 1.5 cm tall. There is some armature in his legs (though it didn't work too well), and his six eyes are glossed. While he may lack the appropriate number of limbs (the abdomen was too small to fit another pair), he is anatomically accurate everywhere else (right down to the pedipalps and spinnerets, thank you very much). Those little hairs are actually pieces of plastic string, glued into the pre-drilled holes after the baking process. Unfortunately, they aren't very firm, so this spider sheds more than my dog. ^^;

I've grown fond of Teddy, so he probably won't be for sale. Also, he'd be bald by the time he made it through shipping. Sorry.
